You were counting the total distance around the OUTSIDE of each garden plot — that is called the PERIMETER! For rectangles, there is a speed trick: add the width and height, then DOUBLE it: (width + height) × 2. So a 3×2 plot needs (3+2)×2 = 10 fence panels! You also spotted that AREA (the space inside) is DIFFERENT from PERIMETER (the distance around) — a 3×2 plot has perimeter 10 but area 6. Every fence, picture frame, room border, and running track on Earth uses this exact same idea!
